“I live in the greatest part of the greatest country in the world, and I’m lucky to have a world-class health care system like Guthrie right in my backyard. They have expanded tremendously over the years, and have done an excellent job bringing the latest advances in medicine and technology to our community.” – Frank Niemiec
Attorney Frank Niemiec and his family have been living in the Twin Tiers region for more than 45 years. Recently, he’s been treated at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital for a cardiac event and prostate cancer. His son’s family also uses the health system for all the care they need, and his grandchildren were born at the hospital. “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for Dr. Sporn,” says Frank. “He saved my life.” After experiencing chest pain and being rushed to the emergency room, Frank had a stent placed in one of his arteries to restore the flow of blood to his heart, and spent several days in the hospital under Daniel Sporn, MD’s watchful supervision. He then spent two months doing outpatient cardiac rehabilitation at Guthrie, began to develop healthier eating habits, and has lowered his blood pressure and lost a little weight. “I’m 72 now, and I feel as good as I did when I was 18,” he says.
A few months after the cardiac event, Frank was diagnosed with prostate cancer, and was able to get high-dose radiation therapy right at Guthrie, under the supervision of Dr. Ahmed Fawzi. After a handful of 30-minute treatments over the course of a few weeks with virtually no side effects, his tumor had shrunk significantly. A year and a half after his treatment, his test results look good.
“I want to thank the Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Health System for all they do for me and my family,” Frank says, “and I am proud to give back.”
