New Cardiovascular Center: Rising to Meet Our Community’s Needs

New Cardiovascular Center: Rising to Meet Our Community’s Needs

“Cardiovascular care is one of the centerpieces of Guthrie. Our heart surgery program is over 50 years old. But the facilities we’re in right now are more than 10 years old and they need to be upgraded. Our population is aging and they are going to need more and more services as this occurs, so we have to build out the facilities with the size and technology to be able to care for their increasing needs. The new Cardiovascular Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital’s advanced equipment and technology will enable our staff to operate with even greater precision, further enhancing the already stellar quality provided to our patients.” – Dr. Joseph Scopelliti, MD

Patients rely on Guthrie, a leading provider of cardiac services in the Twin Tiers region, for accessible, life-saving heart care – and that reliance will only grow. By 2025, the Advisory Board projects that residents of Guthrie’s 11-county region will experience significant growth in their need for cardiovascular procedures. Guthrie aims to meet these increasing service demands and further enhance its reputation for excellence with the construction of the new Cardiovascular Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital.

The Largest, Most Experienced Team in the Region

Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital has been recognized nationally by Truven Health Analytics 10 times as one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals and received multiple Healthgrades awards this year, including recognition as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Interventions for the fourth consecutive year.

Guthrie’s cardiovascular team is the largest and most experienced in the region. More than 30 specialists in 14 locations work together to provide comprehensive care for a variety of disease and conditions, from the most common to the most complex. Guthrie cardiologists consistently receive top ratings on Press Ganey patient satisfaction surveys. Our cardiovascular team has implanted more than 10,000 devices, including pacemakers and defibrillators. From July 2017 to June 2018, our providers treated almost 600 heart attacks. They also performed more than 5,000 cardiac and vascular procedures in that span of time – more than any other health system in our service region.

“We want to be able to provide the best care possible, care that’s equivalent and better than what people get when they travel to large cities,” says Daniel Sporn, MD, FACC, section chief of Cardiology at Guthrie.

Guthrie’s cardiovascular team does incredible work with the resources they have. But in order to maintain and improve that level of care in a region in which the need for cardiac care is expected to rise, support is needed.  The new Cardiovascular Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital is a key component of Guthrie’s Forward Together campaign.

Enhancing Quality, Safety, and Satisfaction

Coming May 2019, this $15.5 million project will:

  • Expand the current Cardiovascular Center at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital to 17,160 square feet
  • Replace the current cardiac catheterization lab, whose last renovations occurred over a decade ago
  • Create a more modern appearance and feature updated amenities, including enhanced patient privacy
  • Provide state-of-the-art technology, including the very latest diagnostic equipment and equipment that will minimize radiation exposure for both providers and patients

“There are a number of new technologies that, right now, we either have not been able to perform, or that we’ve had to do in our operating room, and they require sophisticated equipment,” says Dr. Sporn. “They require a number of people, and a number of pieces of equipment in the room. These new labs will allow us to do just that. To provide those procedures, that type of care, right here.”

We are confident that this project will help our talented cardiovascular team continue to provide our patients with the high-quality care they deserve – now and for years to come.
