Champions On and Off the Court – A Small School Making a Big Difference

The Sayre Lady Redskins basketball team continues to make a difference through their annual Rally for the Cure/ Pink Out Game, demonstrating to their community that they are not only champions on the court but off the court too!

As the Sayre Lady Redskins basketball team prepared for their historic journey to the PIAA Class AA girls basketball playoffs recently, Coach Eileen Sparduti made a visit to Guthrie. There, she presented a check from the team’s annual Rally for the Cure/Pink Out Game which raised more than $3,500 to support Guthrie’s Breast Care Fund. The fund supports local women who are either uninsured or under-insured, receive diagnostic tests and necessary subsequent treatment for breast cancer.

For Coach Sparduti, it’s important that the team understands the importance of their efforts. “The focus of the Breast Care Fund is not cancer- it’s survivorship. Our donation connects us to a community of women who are also fighters – engaged in a battle with much higher stakes than a win or loss in a season record.  It provides a ‘bigger picture’ perspective to what we are about”, she said. In the past, Coach Sparduti and the team have visited the cancer center so they could see firsthand where their dollars went.

Since its inception in 2012, the Rally for the Cure/Pink Out Game has raised over $25,600 for Guthrie’s Breast Care Fund.

Win or lose, the Sayre Lady Redskins are already champions!
